EDUCATION. Through conferences, symposia, colloquia, roundtables, and working groups, the Deason Center fosters collaborations between scholars, criminal justice researchers and criminal justice stakeholders. The Deason Center educates SMU students about criminal justice issues and provides students with academic and experiential opportunities to work in criminal justice policy and reform.
HIGHLIGHT: CRIMINAL JUSTICE POLICY PRACTICUM
The Criminal Justice Policy Practicum (“CJPP”) provides students at the SMU Dedman School of Law with a unique experiential learning opportunity in criminal justice research and policy. Each semester, students work with a Deason Center data set to practice interdisciplinary policy research. Students design, investigate, and publish a data-driven report derived from the Deason data set.”
RURAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE
America’s rural communities have yet to find their place in the national conversation about criminal justice reform. As a thought leader in rural criminal justice arena, the Deason Center is building infrastructure to support data-driven, community-informed criminal justice systems in America’s rural, small town, and tribal communities.
